I think that it would be really hard for Jesse and Abel to become very wealthy because Abel was drafted so that leaves Jesse by himself which makes it even harder to make more money without the help of Abel. I think that Jesse and Abel do not have to be very wealthy to be happy because they should already be happy that they have improved their life by moving out by themselves and going to college and getting a good education. I think that it would still be hard to become wealthy if Abel wasn’t drafted because even when Abel was there working with Jesse they still weren’t making the income they hoped for and had to work on the weekends and find things in alleys to try to sell at flea markets.
This is an interesting question, girls. It speaks to the difficulty faced by those pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. It sounds like it should be easy, but the constant drudgery is hard!!! The lack of hope can be overwhelming, I imagine. And so much goes wrong. I have hope for Jesse though.
Gary Soto works are primarily based off his own experiences. He owes much of his sucessful writing to his childhood and teenage years as a Mexican-American in a Chicano district of California. Gary Soto reflects the adversities of his poverty and ethnicity throughout his youth. He has written many novels, poems, and short stories that add to the collection of his work. Gary Soto was the youngest Ameican poet to have his work in the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry.
